PRP for Hair Loss

A Natural Solution to Fight Hair Loss

Hair Loss, Before and After Platelet Rich Plasma, Healthy Skin Centre

Hair loss and thinning hair is stressful for both men and women. Our hair is part of who we are and its loss affects our self-image and decreases our confidence. It is no wonder, that even in Greek Mythology, Samson’s hair is what gives him his power and its loss will signify the loss of it. Hair loss can be the result of heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions or medications. However, both men and women can now have thicker, healthier hair with platelet rich plasma derived from their own blood.

What is PRP Treatment for Hair Loss?

Platelet rich plasma, commonly referred to as PRP, is a treatment where blood is drawn, similar to a routine blood test, then prepared using a centrifuge to produce a concentration of plasma, rich with platelets.

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) has been used for decades in various medical disciplines to repair and regenerate damaged tissues. Now there are a multitude of studies in the medical literature demonstrating that platelets contain growth factors that strengthen hair and prevent hair loss. PRP is especially useful to combat thinning hair.

PRP treatment for hair restoration is ideal for both men and women suffering from hair loss or a receding hairline.

Benefits of PRP for Hair Loss

Before and After

Frequently Asked Questions

Your first visit includes:

  • A comprehensive medical history
  • Scalp assessment by one of our physician assistants
  • Clinical photography to track progress
  • A personalized treatment plan

Numbing is applied to the scalp and one of our nurses will draw a small amount of blood from your arm (similar to routine lab work). Your blood is processed in a medical centrifuge to concentrate:

  • Platelets
  • Growth factors
  • White blood cells

These regenerative components are then carefully applied to the scalp based on your pattern of hair thinning.

PRP can be delivered in two ways:

  1. Direct Injections into the Scalp by one of our physicians
PRP is injected using very fine needles by one of our dermatologist physicians, following your individual hair loss pattern.
  2. PRP with Microneedling by one of our nurses
PRP may also be applied topically after microneedling, allowing absorption through controlled micro-channels in the scalp.

Both techniques are effective and selected based on your diagnosis and comfort level. PRP stimulates inactive hair follicles to enter the active growth (anagen) phase, helping to improve density and thickness over time.

Routine blood work is not required for every patient.

However, during your consultation, the physician will assess your medical history and may order laboratory testing if needed. In some cases, blood work is helpful to evaluate:

  • Iron levels
  • Thyroid function
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Nutritional deficiencies

If blood tests are required, we will guide you through the process before starting treatment.

A PRP hair restoration session takes approximately 40 minutes from start to finish. There is minimal downtime, and most patients return to normal activities the same day.

For optimal results:

  • 3 – 4 initial treatments
  • Spaced 4 weeks apart

To maintain results:

  • Maintenance sessions every 4–12 months

Hair restoration is a process, consistency matters.

Most patients notice:

  • Decreased shedding within a few weeks
  • Improved thickness over several months
  • Continued improvement between months 3–6

Clinical studies show hair density can improve approximately 20 – 30% after the recommended treatment series, depending on individual follicle responsiveness.

Yes, with important distinctions.

Hair loss is a broad term describing thinning or shedding.

Alopecia is a medical term that refers to specific types of hair loss disorders.

At Healthy Skin Centre:

  • We treat Alopecia Areata (an autoimmune condition causing patchy hair loss) in appropriate cases. PRP does not treat Alopecia Totalis (complete scalp hair loss) or advanced scarring alopecia.
  • PRP works best when hair follicles are still present but weakened. If follicles are completely destroyed or absent, stimulation is not possible.

Your physician will determine whether PRP is appropriate for your specific diagnosis.

PRP is ideal for patients with:

  • Mild to moderate androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern hair loss)
  • Early thinning hair
  • Post-partum shedding
  • Perimenopausal or menopausal hair thinning
  • Patchy alopecia areata (select cases)

Patients who are completely bald or have longstanding follicle loss are not ideal candidates.

Most patients experience minimal discomfort. At Healthy Skin Centre, we enhance comfort by using:

  • Cooling devices
  • Vibration distraction
  • Optional topical numbing cream

We recommend:

  • Taking Tylenol before your visit
  • Being well hydrated

Most patients report little to no discomfort after treatment.

Yes. Because PRP is derived from your own blood, there is:

  • No risk of allergic reaction
  • No synthetic fillers
  • No foreign substances

PRP is a natural regenerative treatment performed under physician supervision.

To reduce bruising risk, avoid the following for 7 days before treatment:

  • ASA (unless medically prescribed)
  • NSAIDs
  • Fish oil
  • Garlic supplements
  • Alcohol (including wine)

Do not stop ASA if prescribed for a medical condition without consulting your physician.

Also:

  • Drink at least 1 litre of water in the 24 hours before treatment
  • Eat a normal meal before your appointment
  • Resume normal activities immediately
  • Warm shower 12–24 hours after treatment
  • Avoid hair dyes and harsh chemicals for 1 week
  • Apply hair products after 24 hours

Mild redness or bruising may occur and resolves naturally.

PRP does not cure baldness.

PRP improves hair thickness and quality by:

  • Stimulating the hair bulb (root)
  • Reversing follicle miniaturization
  • Extending the growth phase

Hair must be present to be stimulated. PRP enhances, it does not create brand new follicles.

  • Physician-supervised treatments
  • Dermatologist-performed scalp injections
  • Customized PRP with microneedling options
  • Clinical photography tracking
  • Medical evaluation of underlying causes
  • Evidence-based protocols

We do not offer “one-size-fits-all” treatments. Your plan is individualized.
